Pare
Mountains Tanzania’s north-east is one of its most beautiful and unspoilt regions, far from the conventional tourist trail. From Kilimanjaro, you can make your way eastwards to the coast, stopping en route for cultural activities, sightseeing and exploring – all with expert local guides. Most of our Northeastern Tanzania programmes last between 6 and 9 days, but we can be flexible in creating an itinerary that suits your needs and budget. The Pare (pronounced ‘Pa-ray’) Mountains, east of Moshi, are the setting for Mama Grace’s Cultural Tourism Programme. You’ll be warmly welcomed into traditional Tanzanian life at this family home, on the site of a boarding primary school for orphans. Mama Grace offers a wide range of options, including visits to sisal and brick-making factories and a traditional brewery; Ki-Pare music and dance workshops; a sunset visit to Nyumba ya Mungu Reservoir, to watch the birds coming in to roost and keep an eye out for crocodiles; hiking in the mountains; and a visit to Lembeni Herbal Hospital, where you can chat with a traditional healer. High in the rainforest/cloud forest of the Usambara Mountains, further east than the Pare range, the Amani Forest Reserve is one of the prime locations for endemic bird species in Tanzania. It’s also the home of the National Institute for Medical Research, which provides comfortable guest houses for visiting researchers: the basic facilities, old-fashioned décor and libraries of old books add to the ambience of exploration and discovery. Local guides offer a variety of walking and driving tours, spotting the bird life of the neighbouring tea plantations as well as primary forest. Oreteti’s Swahili Coast Cultural Programme, based in and around the small town of Pangani, offers the opportunity for guests to discover the day-to-day life of Muslim fishing communities as well as the history of the slave trade. There are optional excursions to Amboni Caves, Galanos Sulphur Springs, and the town of Tanga itself. Most of our guests also look forward to a few days relaxing at Peponi (‘Paradise’) Beach Resort, with its white sands, beachside bandas and delicious fresh seafood. The most adventurous can even travel by dhow (sailing boat) direct to Zanzibar: you’ll arrive slightly damp, but it’s an unforgettable experience!
Tanzania’s ‘Spice Island’ is one of its most popular tourist destinations, with unspoilt beaches; fascinating tours of Stone Town with its narrow cobbled streets and Arab-inspired buildings; and the opportunity to visit the spice plantations themselves. Peel a strip of bark from a tree and smell the cinnamon, or pluck a fresh flower and inhale the scent of cloves. Oreteti can arrange visits of any length, incorporating accommodation of any standard, from budget guest houses in Stone Town to luxurious beach hideaways in the more remote parts of the island. |
